Practiced all over Europe and South America, Biodanza© (Bio meaning life, and danza meaning dance) is an unforgettable experience. It is a rediscovery of the innocence of love, the beauty of touch, and the meaning of movement.
Professor Rolando Toro, psychologist, anthropologist, poet and artist from Chile, created the Biodanza system in the 70s. The great results he obtained while working with his patients made this system the ideal alternative to help people unblock their emotions, feelings and creativity while bringing balance and harmony to the body and mind. It has a specifically Latin feel to it.
The focus is on living in the body, the contact with others, the joy of dancing and the ecstasy of music. Biodanza is essentially a system of human integration, or re-education, involving the use of specific music and movement to create a transforming experience called 'vivencia'meaning 'the lived moment ' in the person.
This transformation involves the humanisation of the person through positive interactions with others that work on self-connection (experiencing emotion), self-expression, communication, feedback and group interaction.
This is all carried out in a therapeutic environment (a safe place) where silence is maintained to shift the focus to non-verbal or bodily communication, which amounts to most of the human interaction.
Non-verbal communication is estimated to account for 80% of human communication and therefore is much more profound and transformative than verbal communication. In fact, Biodanza marks the shift within psychological, educational and therapeutic techniques towards the body as the repository of traumas, experiences and personal history, where the variety of human experience is literally somatised. In terms of healing, the body is the royal road (Freud) to well being and integration.
Biodanza is somewhere between a therapy and a system of re-education, and though it defies easy categorisation and superficial understanding, it does illustrate elements of both.
It performs as a therapy in that it brings people in touch with what is going on inside (this is quite a remarkable experience existentially!), whether this is joy or sorrow, transformation or trauma, and helps people to express and integrate their experience in a therapeutic way.
It is also seen as a re-education system as the implication and scope of Biodanza is so wide, it affects the entire being, behaviour and lifestyle of the person; changing their outlook and perspective. for example, it is an excellent antidote to depression as it raises the level of body activity, it brings people into contact with others, and rediscovers trust and love.
It has huge implications for educational systems and how effect and the body should be integrated into them. The goal of Biodanza is: the connection of the person with their body, with the emotions and feelings as they actually are experienced, a recovery of the basic instincts (e.g. survival, vitality, aliveness, connection with others, relationship and reproduction, community, global solidarity and compassion), re-connection with life, the reversal of the negative effects of culture (i.e. rejecting a ?culture of death? and violence), and a recovery of the fundamental joy and delight in the body and sensation. It is a recovery of a positive sexuality, that is wider than mere biology, but which embraces the whole range of emotion and sensation in the body and in contact with another person at all levels.
The technique has specific exercises and music aimed at key human experiences known as the lines of vivencia (the experience of being in the Now).
The five lines of vivencia are represented as: vitality, sexuality, creativity, affectivity and transcendence:
Vitality: Our vital energy; our impulse to face the world.
Sexuality: an appropriate sense of respect for the body and intimacy that is beyond biology; a recovery of pleasure and innocence.
Creativity: The element of renovation that we must apply to our daily lives.Affectivity: Emphasis on feeling; solidarity love, tenderness and respect among human beings.
Transcendence: Spirituality; Going beyond our own ego in order to reach higher levels of integration within humanity, nature and the universe.During a session of Biodanza, music is used to stimulate peoples creativity as they express themselves through dance.
The exercises aim to promote and encourage the release of trapped emotions that result from high stressors in modern life. The dance offers a deeper understanding and development of self-awareness and expression. It also helps people relate and bond with others. With a session of Biodanza, people feel an awakening of a consciousness of their bodies, the power of communication and of universal human solidarity.
Biodanza produces a humanising ecology based on love. Finally, Biodanza, not only promotes a higher quality of life, but it also helps people achieve a deeper sense of happiness. Best of all, no previous dance experience is necessary for weekly classes. Its for everyone.
